Cracked down upon

So it feels like the Crackdown demo was more of a curse than a blessing. It served only to whet my appetite further, without truly satisfying my need for super agent killing sprees. It showed me bliss, but didn't actually let me own the feeling. The all-too-short demo, with its accelerated skill progression, gives a nice glimpse into what the game will be like. I think it was a wise decision to speed up skill progression for the demo, just so players unfamiliar with the concept of the game can get a taste of what its all about.

Of course the downside is that some people will probably assume that the retail game will truly be that easy.

I have to say, I was pretty annoyed that they removed the ability to directly invite a friend to play co-op with you. Instead you have to use the game search to hope to find the person you want to play with. I mean, it's already a limited demo, what's the point of not letting us play with friends?

As fun as the game is, it truly shines when in co-op mode. I think that if you don't play Crackdown in co-op, you may very well be cheating yourself. I look forward to February for the full game.

And speaking of a full game, the beta test for Vanguard: Saga of Heroes came to a close last night. I'd been beta testing sporadically over the past four or five months, but the game really made some vast improvements over the past couple of weeks, as things all started coming together.

The retail game launches next week. There's still a ways to go, and I think the first six months of game will be a real growth period, but then, that's true of any MMO. An MMO is never a finished product... they are constantly evolving projects.

However, I see a lot of promise in Vanguard, that I admit I didn't quite see six months ago. So I preordered and I'll be playing when the servers go live.

At least until the Age of Conan beta starts...

Winter-een-mas Eve

Winter-een-mas festivities begin tomorrow. Here is the schedule of GameDays.

  • Thursday the 25th - Battlefield 2142 (PC) 7PM EST
  • Friday the 26th - Rainbow Six: Vegas (360) 8PM EST
  • Saturday the 27th - Dark Messiah of Might and Magic (PC) 4PM EST
  • Sunday the 28th - Gears of War (360) 3PM EST
  • Monday the 29th -Dawn of War: Dark Crusade (PC) 6pm EST
  • Tuesday the 30th - Crackdown Co-op Demo (360) 7PM (slots by contest winner only)
  • Wednesday the 31st - Halo 2 (360) 8PM
I've also made threads in the GameDay forum for each event. I'll be posting details each day before each event.

For all of these events, it will be first-come, first served, with the exception of the Crackdown demo. That's 1 on 1 gametime with me, so I'm going to give away those slots in a special manner. A contest.

Send in your most creative Winter-een-mas photograph to cad.contest (at), and if I choose yours as my favorite, you'll win the Crackdown co-op slot. Alternatively, if you don't celebrate Winter-een-mas, you can send in your most creative Crackdown related artwork (edited screens accepted) for a chance to win as well.

In addition, the guys over at UGT Servers have donated a 400 person ventrilo server for the week of Winter-een-mas, that we can use to communicate and organize games. So if you can't get into one of the games/servers where I am, you can still find other people to game with.

All of that information will be posted tomorrow, on the first day of Winter-een-mas!

Ventrilo Server Information

The Winter-een-mas 2007 Ventrilo Server is now online!

Server IP:

There are a number of channels set up on the server to make it easier to find other people to talk to and play games with, and I'll be adding more channels over the next few days.

This server is available to all CAD fans for the entire week of Winter-een-mas, to make it easier to find eachother and play games, courtesy of UGT Servers.

I'll be popping in and out under the name [CAD]Tim, and I'll be on shortly before 7pm EST tonight to say hello, and prepare for our Battlefield 2142 event this evening.

(Note: You may see me on, but not talking. If that's the case I'm away from the computer, or doing work.)
