Operation: Spider Shark

Operation: Spider Shark

League of Legends has a referral program that lets you earn stuff in-game like character skins, etc. The more referrals you get, the cooler the rewards. At the very top of the spectrum, at a staggering ten-thousand referrals, is the opportunity to go to Riot HQ and design a champion with the team.

I'm going to be blunt here... I want to see if I can get them to put a Spider Shark in the game.* Or if they shoot down the Spider Shark idea, I'll push for a giant monkey wielding a steam-powered gatling gun. Or some sort of creature made out of pudding.

Either way, I'd need your help. I've thrown my League of Legends referral link into newsposts a couple of times in the past, just trying to passively get a couple of the champion skins. As a result, I've now accumulated almost a couple thousand referrals.

Whereas I once looked at 10,000 referrals as incredibly absurd and out of the realm of possibility, I'm now thinking it's only mildly absurd, and perhaps slightly within grasp of the realm of possibility.

'So what would I need to do', you're asking yourself? It's fairly straightforward.

  1. Follow this link.
  2. Set up an account with an email address and download the game.
  3. Reach Summoner Level 5 (you can do this via the tutorial and some co-op vs AI games)

That's it! That's a valid referral. The game is free to download and play. And to be entirely honest... I wouldn't even bother suggesting this little campaign if I didn't think that a lot of you are going to find that you really enjoy the game anyway. It's certainly managed to get it's hooks in me.

I think we have a shot at this. You guys are pretty fucking amazing. And you know what, if we fall short... hey, a bunch of you may have found a new game you enjoy, and I got to draw a cool spider shark. Win all around no matter what!

So... won't you please think of the many, many poor sharks out there that spend their days wishing they could traverse land on arachnid appendages, and melt the faces of all they come across?

*I came up with Gorge's abilities on the fly. I make no claim that they would be balanced in-game. That's Riot's department and they can do a far better job than I can. I mostly just care about getting the concept into the game.

Further musing on Gorge

For the comic I had to briefly summarize some of the skills I think would work well on Gorge, but any of you that play LoL likely know that skills are more detailed than the summaries given on their champion pages.

For his passive, I thought "Glide" would be neat. Basically it would make Gorge move (10% or so) faster while in water. This works well on Summoner's Rift, because a river cuts across the entire map. It means that Gorge's speed buff isn't overwhelmingly overpowered, but in the right circumstances can really benefit him (ie, moving between lanes, teamfights at Baron/Dragon, chasing down the river, etc).

Obviously this becomes useless in the 3v3 map, or if Riot ever gets around to releasing new 5v5 maps, and they don't happen to have water.

If that wouldn't work as his passive, his Ultimate could be augmented to provide a speed buff while he's burrowed. Say he's burrowed for 5 seconds, or until you click the R again to resurface him. While burrowed, all we see is his fin, and he moves faster.

For Chum the Water, a bleed effect on the ability isn't bad by itself, but I think it could be punched up some. I was tempted to have it allow him to see enemies with low health, but Warwick sort of already does that.

Another idea would be that Gorge bites a champion, causing it to bleed, leaving a visible blood trail for a period of 5/6/7/8/10 seconds, that Gorge can see/follow anywhere on the map.

Or alternatively, the ability causes you to bleed for a few seconds, and while around you, Gorge goes into a frenzy, increasing his attack speed.

Skitter is pretty straightforward... sort of like Rumble's ultimate, or Corki's Valkyrie, it would be a surge forward in a straight line with damage. Perhaps increased if the target is bleeding.

And finally, because I like my champions to have a little utility as well, we have Steel Web. I picture it sort of like Anivia's wall, but perhaps a little smaller, and crossing it causes a temporary slow. Or if that doesn't work, perhaps small little webs that function similar to Caitlyn's traps.

Of course, as I said above, there's no guarantee that we'll get the 10k referrals, or that Riot would be on board with this champion in any shape or form if we do... but I do so enjoy imagining this stuff.

Currently sitting at over 4,000 referrals, as long as people reach level 5 on them! Wow! I'm impressed!

I had suspected (and still do, really) that the road to 10k referrals might take a few months. But holy shit, we might manage to knock out half of it this weekend alone!

In the event that we ever reach 10k, as soon as I'm done laughing my ass off, ultimately I'd like to create a series of polls to determine the champion we ask Riot to make. Obviously I'm on board with some sort of shark-based champion, but I'm all for doing things democratically. After all, it's you guys that would be making this happen in the first place.

But we'll cross that bridge if we ever get to it!
